New York City Half Marathon and Galen Rupp's Mask

This was a great race but did you see the mask worn by Galen Rupp? I've never seen anything like it in a world class race, and I'm waiting for an explanation (according to USA Track & Field it was "to ward off an asthma attack").

The letsrun posters are having a field day with this one.

You can watch a replay at New York Road Runners TV!

More than One Million Now Running Half Marathons in the U.S.

In the past decade (2000-09), U.S. half-marathon finishers have grown from 482,000 to 1,113,000, a 131% increase. From 2008 to 2009, the number of half marathon finishers increased by 24%. Another interesting statistic- 57% of all half marathon finishers were women! -runningusa.org

I'm not surprised that the median time is slowly increasing, from 1:57:45 in 2002 to 2:00:21 in 2009 for men. The median finish time for women in 2009 was just under 2:20, or 10:40 per mile. I suspect a growing number of walkers entering races skew that time down considerably.

The half marathon distance makes perfect sense- challenging but still an achievable goal for most former couch potatoes.

In case you are wondering, the largest half marathon in the US is the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis, with 30,281 finishers in 2009.

Mo Trafeh- Self Coached Runner Poised for a Breakthrough!

I'm rooting for Mo Trafeh to do something special at the NY City Half Marathon this weekend.

In case you missed it, Trafeh led the Jacksonville Gate River Run (15 kilometers) just last weekend from start to finsh (4:22 opening mile), winning with an impressive 42:58. Not bad for a self-coached runner with NO SPONSOR!

Good write up on Trafeh in Running Times.

Currently his sole means of support is road race prize money, so you know Trafeh is hungry and motivated. Could you imagine Ryan Hall racing 15K an a half-marathon on back to back weekends?

Go for it Mo! I'm rooting for you to hang in with marathon world record holder Halie Gebrselassie. You can watch coverage of the race at 7:30 am EST at universalsports.com.
